Equine dentistry has a long been considered important in the care of horses. Yet, it is normally associated with care of older horses that develop bad dentition due to their aging teeth. In fact, many of these abnormalities can be prevented by prophylactic dentistry that starts as early as the foal is born. Early evaluation of the foal’s dentition allows to evaluate if the foal has any developmental anomalies that will have an impact on the eruption, development and wear of his future milk and adult teeth. Many of these developmental abnormalities have a restricted time frame in which they can be corrected by relatively simple interventions early in life. Once horses are fully grown it may become more difficult and the anomalies will start impact on the horse’s dental capital. Ask your vet to check your foals’ teeth, particularly occlusion and don’t hesitate to contact Camden Equine Centre if you think something is odd.
