Joker presented to Camden Equine Centre as he had been experiencing signs of respiratory stress and coughing when ridden. Dr Marta Wereszka and Dr Darien Feary performed a physical examination along with blood work and a lung wash.
A lung wash is a diagnostic procedure where an endoscope is inserted into the trachea and then flushed with saline, the saline mixes with any mucus present and a sample is sucked back through a catheter. The contaminated saline was sent to pathology and revealed Joker has bacterial bronchiolitis and inflammatory airway disease (IAD). IAD primarily affects younger horses in training who do not show signs of respiratory difficulty at rest, but when exercising experience difficulty breathing, coughing and decreased performance.
Joker will stay in the hospital for a few days receiving antibiotics and the equine version of Ventolin (fluticasone and ipratropium), he will then return home for a relaxing 4 week paddock holiday and a diet to restrict the possibility of inhaling any dust.
